How Brave Am I?
Have you heard the story of five missionaries and their families who went into Ecuador in the 1950’s in an attempt to reach the Auca (Huaorani) people with the gospel. Their story is one of bravery that ended in tragedy. The five men were brutally murdered in January of 1956 by the very people they were trying to reach.
You think that would be the end of the story, but it wasn’t, in 1958, two years later, the sister of one of the slain missionaries along with the wife and child of another one went back into Ecuador and lived with the Auca tribe and the people who had committed the murders of their loved ones. Through these women the Bible was translated into the Auca language and the men who committed the murders became moved to accept the free gift of God’s love and salvation and they became Christian leaders to their tribe.
The future of that tribe and those people became completely different because these women were brave and walked in the direction God called them.
How Brave Am I?
Insight for today: What is God calling me to to brave in, a moment, a relationship, telling the truth in love or writing out my weaknesses for all to read?
The missionaries story is told in a book by Elisabeth Elliot - Through the Gates of Splendor (she was the wife of Jim Elliot - one of the slain missionaries, and she was one of the women who lived with the Auca’s.)
