Every summer when my son was in intermediate and middle school we would travel from Northern Indiana to Central Illinois to drop him off to spend a week or two with my parents. One of these trips became an adventure. My son was in the back seat playing on his Nintendo DS and was oblivious to what was going on, meanwhile on the horizon the sky began to darken, the winds started and I knew a storm was brewing. I turned on the radio and found a local station to hopefully find out about the storm. The sky continued to darken and the rain started. They were reporting that hail was coming and then the announcer mentioned the word that brings dread, a tornado had been sited in the not too far distance. I wasn’t sure what to do, it was becoming hard to see, and every underpass had semi trucks parked underneath to avoid the weather. I could see off in one direction what looked like a funnel cloud forming. I decided to keep driving for a little bit and see if I could get off at the next exit and find a safe place for us to hunker down. The thing is as I continued to drive I started to move past some of the most severe parts of the storm and then the sky cleared and the rain stopped and the most beautiful rainbow appeared.
It’s not if the storm comes, it’s when the storm comes, what do we do?
Storms come in all shapes and sizes, at times we expect and times that are completely unexpected. How do I deal with these storms? Just like me turning on the radio to get information on the storm, I turn to God, the Bible and trusted family and friends to give me the information I need to get through the other storms of life.
